Kids Halloween Art Activities That Are Both Creepy and Cute

Odella| Kid-Friendly Horror

It’s that time of year: Kids Halloween art time! From bats to ghosts to witches, these activity ideas are delightfully creepy and cute.

When I was a kid, Halloween was a one-day celebration. It’s now a month-long thing with multiple trunk-or-treats, haunted houses, and other Halloween events.

And honestly, I’m kinda here for it.

I love the fact that my kids get to immerse themselves in spooky season much longer, and have an excuse to wear their costume multiple times!

It also means plenty of kids Halloween art opportunities… which is great, because sometimes it’s hard to narrow down ideas. This narrows the scope. ๐Ÿ™‚

While you’re here, make sure to check out my newest book, Graveyard Dance: A Halloween Picture Book! It’s a picture book inspired (like my adult novel, The Violin) by Saint-Saens’s Danse Macabre, and is a friendly and inclusive spooky read about the celebration that happens after trick-or-treating is over.

Flapping Bat Craft

My middle daughter is obsessed with fruit bats because of Bluey. When I rediscovered the book Stellaluna, it became a must-read with her! In my search for other things to delight her, I found this bat craft from Raising Veggie Lovers:

I mean, how cute is this? And it’s so simple: you just need the free printable template (not even a signup required), cardstock, a straw, tape, and some string.

Super Simple Black Cat Craft

This is another simple craft that only requires construction paper and glue, and ends up being super cute! Cheap and easy is a winner in my book.

This black cat kids Halloween art goes great on its own or with other crafts, and can be used as decor. My kids love making holiday decorations ๐Ÿ™‚

Paper Plate and Bubble Wrap Witch Cauldron

I thought this craft from Raise Curious Kids was ingenious in the way it uses bubble wrap to make the cauldron look like it’s bubbling!

Kids can get extra creative with this one, too: the potion can be different colors, and you could even incorporate other art materials/textures if desired.

But even if you do it 100% as written, it turns out super cute with minimal materials!

Handprint Zombie Kids Halloween Art

Before I became a parent, I didn’t really ‘get’ the appeal of all the handprint art kids do. Now that I see how fast they grow and how adorably tiny their hands are, I totally get it.

Plus, it makes for plenty of simple and delightful crafts like this zombie handprint art from Artsy Momma:

All you need is construction paper, a sharpie, and googly eyes for extra fun.

Vampire Photo Craft For Kids

My kids love art that incorporates pictures of themselves, and I thought this kids Halloween art idea from Simple Everyday Mom was hilariously adorable:

This one does require you to print photos of your kids (tricky depending on what kind of printer you have/whether you have to run to the store) plus brads, so it might take more planning… but seriously, how cute?

Colorful Yarn Spider Craft

As a long-time knitter, I’ve got a big stash of yarn. Crafts that can help me use it up are greatly appreciated, especially when they end up as cute as these colorful yarn spiders from Hello Wonderful:

This craft requires styrofoam balls, pipe cleaners, yarn, googly eyes, and hot glue, but is pretty simple to put together. And seriously, how cute! You could even go the extra mile and use any extra yarn to make a matching web… but you do you ๐Ÿ˜‰

Pencil Eraser Ghost Craft

On the topic of kids Halloween art projects that allow for lots of color options, this pencil eraser ghost craft idea from Crafty Morning can be done using any color your child wants (or multiple!)

Seriously, how cute are these? And I have a fondness for this kind of negative space-style art, so we’ll definitely be making these this October.

Paper Bag Jack-o-Lantern Puppet

Carving pumpkins with four kids is sometimes… tedious, to say the least. So when I saw this much easier alternative from Simple Everyday Mom, I knew I had to share it:

The other benefit? Kids can actually play with this one (until they inevitably lose it or pour water on it… but I digress.)

Build a Mummy Printable Craft

I discovered these “build a (blank)” printables a few weeks ago, and my kids love them. I love that even my littlest can take part in making them! This Build a Mummy printable from The Purple Pumpkin Blog is extra cute:

You just print it out, then cut out the pieces and glue them together. It’s easy and adorable!
